Sleep

Thought I’d share a conversation from last night (around 5am). This was between me and my youngest (who’ll be 3 Oct 26th):

Virtually every night, the boy stumbles into our bedroom and climbs into our bed. I usually sleep through that part, but often wake a short time later. At that point, I move the boy back to his bed.

Me, standing and looking at the boy in the bed. He manages to immediately absorb my spot in the bed as soon as I vacate it. Is this in some way related to the Oedipus complex?
His eyes are open, but he doesn’t seem to realize he’s looking at me.

me: Lucas, I’m going to put you back in your bed.
boy: This is not my bed?
me: No.
boy: This is someone else’s bed?
me: Yes - it’s Mom and Dad’s.

I pause, because I can’t tell if he’s really awake. I pick him up.
boy: Are we in a new house too?
me: No, same house.
boy: I’m getting heavy. [He’s proud that he’s getting bigger.]
me: Yes you are.

pause. I put him in his bed and start to cover him.
boy: It’s too bright in here (referring to the Christmas lights we use as a nightlight).
me: Here, I’ll put your pillow up close to your head to help block the light. If you close your eyes, that helps too.
boy: My head is cold.
me: I’m pulling the covers up…good night.

I brought it up this morning at breakfast–he doesn’t even remember getting into our bed last night. Kids are fun.
